Cod Fishing in Homer Alaska

There are several types of cod available while fishing out of Homer Alaska. By far the most popular to catch and eat are the Lingcod.  The cod family also includes kelp greenling, pacific cod and Pollock.

KELP GREENLING

Kelp greenling has a similarly long single dorsal fin as the lingcod, notched in the middle of its length, but they lack the rigid spines found on lingcod dorsal fins. Male kelp greenling has irregular blue spots on or near their heads; females are various shades of golden yellow on their heads and fins.  Kelp greenling grows only to about 21 inches long.

PACIFIC COD, TOMCOD AND POLLOCK

All three of these fish have distinct dorsal fins and two anal fins, no rigid spines on their fins and small teeth. Pacific cod and tomcod have a prominent "barbell" beneath their chin; on Pollock it is very small or absent.  Pacific cod are typically under 36 inches and Pacific tomcod are typically under 20 inches and Pollock are typically under 30 inches.
